The advantages of sectional garage doors for sheds and garages

Why do i need a sectional door on my garage, shed or barn?

What kind of door should you add to a shed or small garage? Is a sectional door really a good option? It can be the best choice if it matches with your access and security needs. Here are four reasons to install a sectional door on your shed, barn or small garage.

First of all, know your measurements

There is a minimum size requirement for sectional doors, so the first step is to make certain that you can lift the door up under the roof and have space to retract it fully when opening. Here are the size requirements:

  • The shed or garage must have a floor area of 112 ft2. So, for example, the shed or garage must be at least 8 feet wide and 14 feet long.
  • There should be 5 inches of headroom above the door.
  • If you want to use an electric opener, the headroom should be at least 7 inches.

Why choose a sectional door?

  • If you have two 36″ X 78″ wood or steel doors that open outward, you will always have to remove snow so that the doors can swing open without being blocked. There will be no quick access after a snowfall. This could be a problem if you keep your snow removal equipment inside the shed or garage. A sectional door will always open regardless of exterior obstructions.
  • A sectional door opens upward, so floor space is maximized. If your swinging doors open inward, you are losing a significant amount of storage space because you cannot place anything in the swing path of the door.
  • Because they are attached side by side, swinging doors limit the opening space of the shed or garage. If you have large equipment such as an ATV or tractor, getting it inside can be tight. Overhead sectional doors provide the absolute maximum amount of opening space, so moving large items is easier.
  • Sectional doors are more convenient because you can install an electric door opener. This is simply not possible with two access doors.

What are the size and design options?

  • As far as door dimensions, the minimum width is 4 feet (1.2 m). You can opt for something much wider if needed. You just have to size the door to the nearest inch (25 mm). How tall can it be? This depends on your needs, but the most common sectional door heights are between 6′ 6″ and 7′ 0″ (1.98 and 2.1 m).
  • What will it look like? The designs of our products are diverse. You may want to have the same look as your main garage or your home. This is usually easy to accomplish. We offer designs that include flush, with thin lines, rectangular embossed designs, or even decorative designs that resemble carriage doors.
  • Windows can add a decorative touch, and they can let some natural light into your shed. This can be an advantage if you plan to spend time working inside.
  • Decorative hardware can also enhance the look of your shed. Decorative hardware can elevate the door design from generic to stylish and personalized. For example, you can use hinges and handles that bring to mind classic carriage doors with wrought iron accents.
