I’m thinking about insulating my garage, is it worthwhile?

If you’re contemplating whether or not to insulate your garage, you probably know by now that there is no set rule. Some government organizations say that the common wall between your home and an attached garage must have a certain R‑value, as must any ceilings that have rooms above them. There are currently no regulations for detached garages.

So, if there are no concrete regulations, why would you bother? Of course, it mainly depends on what you use your garage for, but if you’re in there often, you will be a lot more comfortable with insulation (and maybe even heating).

We’ve come up with six reasons why we think insulating your garage is worthwhile:

1. Your garage is an extension of your home

Once only used for parking cars and other recreational vehicle, garages are now being transformed nationwide into gyms, “man caves”, crafts areas and much more. If you plan on using your garage as an additional room, you’ll need to insulate it (and maybe even heat it) to be able to use it all year long.

2. Insulated garages act as a cold weather barrier

Going to the trouble of insulating the shared wall between your garage and home and weather-stripping the access door is only truly worthwhile if you also insulate the rest of your garage. While these measures will stop cold air from entering your home while the access door is closed, as soon as you open it the cold air seeps into your home, and your comfortable (and expensive) warm air escapes into the cold garage.

3. You might not have a choice

If you have plumbing running through your garage and you don’t insulate you face frozen pipes in the winter.

We’ve already mentioned rooms above garages, well if you don’t insulate the ceiling you’ll find that room will never get warm and you’ll be wasting money trying to heat it.

4. Uninsulated garages breed humidity…

... and humidity breeds rust and mould! Probably not an environment you want to keep your treasured belongings in, right?

5. Insulated garages act as a carbon monoxide barrier

There is a much smaller risk of carbon monoxide seeping into your home through your garage if it’s insulated. We also suggest installing a carbon monoxide detector next to the access door for added security.

6. Insulated garages act as a sound barrier

Imagine a world where you can get out of bed at 6am on a Sunday and get an early start on your latest DIY project (if you’re into that), without the rest of the street complaining about the noise… Seems, far-fetched, right? But it doesn’t have to be, well-insulated garages reduce the level of sound leaving your garage, and also reduces the amount of sound entering your home. Your kid’s garage band doesn’t seem like such a bad idea now, does it?

Last but not least, don’t leave your garage door out!

You’ve done it, you’ve insulated all three garage walls, the ceiling, and weather-stripped your access door, are you forgetting something? Garage doors are large and act as a fourth wall, all your efforts will be in vain if you don’t also have an insulated garage door.
