Having a garage door problem? Should you fix it, or do you need a new door?

To fix or replace your garage door – that is the question!

Is your garage door making weird sounds? Does it not work as well as it used to? You might be thinking about changing it soon, perhaps next season. But the longer you wait, the more in danger you become!

There are several reasons why your door may not be operating as smoothly as it used to. Perhaps it has even stopped working altogether. To help you understand what may have broken your door, and what kind of immediate decisions you need to make for part or all of the door, here is a guide to provide some clarity.

When You Should REPAIR Your Garage Door

If there are components of your garage that can be repaired, it may be cheaper to replace just these parts rather than replacing the entire door altogether. The sooner you can fix these problems, the better it becomes for your wallet – and your safety! Here are a few warning signs that a part may need to be repaired:

  • The door will close a few inches, then suddenly open. Some of the most common service calls that professional door specialists receive are in regards to faulty electric door openers. In this case, it may be due to a misaligned safety reversing system. You will need a photo eye unit replaced. If it is a problem with the wires that connect two units, you need to contact a garage door technician.
  • The door will open and close a lot slower than it used to. When this happens, this is because the garage door’s spring system has broken or lost a lot of its tension. This causes the opener to work a lot harder than normal, and the gear system will make thumping noises, which can be scary and dangerous. To test this issue, pull on the emergency release cord in the garage. Open your door manually, and if the door is heavy, that means that the spring is having problems. Contact a professional garage door technician to fix this issue.
  • The garage door is jerky or it vibrates when it opens. This may be a sign that the lifting cables are frayed or broken. Look at the vertical tracks of your door. Is there a sign of wear or tear on either side? This is a serious issue, and you shouldn’t delay in contacting a professional garage door technician as soon as you can.
  • There is a short, but loud, noise. Most garage doors come with steel tracks. Or, it can have a commercial grade track for larger doors. This issue may occur when one of those vertical tracks has become dented, twisted, or bent. This is another serious problem that should be fixed right away.

In the above cases, you should not attempt to repair the garage door or garage door opener by yourself. Instead, contact a professional. Consider that trying to adjust a garage door on your own is very risky and dangerous, and is best left with those who have been trained to do it right.

When you Should REPLACE Your Garage Door

There are many reasons why you should replace your garage door. It does not necessarily have to do with age – some doors installed decades ago can still work perfectly fine. This is because the owner may have taken good care of it, and repaired it whenever it needed help. Perhaps even the moving garage door parts have been properly lubricated a couple of times per year. There are, however, plenty of valid reasons why you should replace your whole door – and your entire door system – as soon as possible:

  • The door system has been used in harsh weather and conditions. Your garage is likely uninsulated and unheated, making the weather conditions tough on your garage. The elements will affect all of the metal parts of your garage system, making it difficult for the parts to work properly after a while.
  • One of the door’s sections has sustained heavy It’s bound to happen – one day you back out of your garage too fast, and hit the garage door on your way out, which caused a dent. Or perhaps an object inside the garage got pushed into the door. Regardless, there is a dent, causing the door to have a broken or damaged section. This can start to cause other performance issues with the door, which causes to deteriorate quickly.
  • You want to sell your home fast, and with good value. If you are looking to sell, any real estate agent will tell you that having a new and well-performing garage door is the key to selling well and selling fast.
